Portion is a free daily puzzle about cutting a shape fairly. You swipe one or two straight cuts across a lumpy shape to split it into set portions, like 25, 50 and 25 percent. Your score is how close the pieces come, by area.
How do you play Portion?
- Read the prompt at the top. It names the day, the number of portions and how many cuts you get, like "Thursday · 3 portions from two cuts". Colored chips show each target.
- Swipe across the shape to draw a straight cut, right through. Swipe again to redo it.
- Drag the round handles at either end of a cut to fine-tune it.
- Tap Cut. The pieces slide apart and each one shows its real share of the shape.
- Read your accuracy and verdict. Tap Cut again to clear the board and have another go.
A faint line shows your last try, so the next one has something to aim from. Before you tap Cut, the undo button removes your last cut. On a keyboard, Enter cuts and Backspace undoes.
How does Portion change through the week?
The targets follow the day of the week, and they get harder toward Sunday:
| Day | Targets |
|---|---|
| Monday | 50/50, one cut |
| Tuesday | 45/55 or 40/60, one cut |
| Wednesday | 35/65, 30/70 or 25/75, one cut |
| Thursday | three portions from two cuts, such as 25/50/25 or 30/40/30 |
| Friday | three uneven portions from two cuts |
| Saturday | four equal quarters from two cuts |
| Sunday | four uneven portions from two cuts |
The shape is new every day, and everyone gets the same shape and targets.
How is accuracy scored?
Portion measures how much of the shape ended up in the wrong portion. Your accuracy is 100% minus that amount.
Take a Monday 50/50. Your pieces come out at 53% and 47%. One piece has 3% too much and the other is 3% short. That's the same 3% of the shape in the wrong place, so you score 97.0%.
With three pieces, it works the same way. Say Thursday asks for 25/50/25 and you cut 28/45/27:
28 vs 25: 3 over 45 vs 50: 5 under 27 vs 25: 2 over Wrong portion: (3 + 5 + 2) ÷ 2 = 5 Accuracy: 95.0%
The order doesn't matter. Portion matches your pieces to the targets in the way that suits you best. It's all area, so a piece that looks long and thin can still be small.
The verdict goes by how far off you were:
| Verdict | How far off |
|---|---|
| Perfect portions | 0.3% or less |
| Razor sharp | 1% or less |
| Nicely cut | 2.5% or less |
| Close | 5% or less |
| Not quite | more than that |
How do two cuts work?
Two cuts can make three pieces or four. If the cuts don't cross inside the shape, you get three. If they cross, you get four.
So on Thursday and Friday, keep your cuts from crossing inside the shape. On Saturday and Sunday, cross them. If you end up with an extra piece, it has no target, and all of it counts as off.
With two cuts down, a new swipe replaces the cut nearest to it.
Tips for cleaner cuts
- The designer's tip: your first cut won't be perfect, so nudge it. Get the cut roughly right, then drag the round handles at either end to fine-tune it before you tap Cut. The nudging is where the accuracy comes from.
- Watch the bulges. A lump on one side holds more area than it looks.
- Use the ghost line. Compare your last try's percentages and move the cut a little toward the piece that came up short.
- Fix one cut at a time. On two-cut days, get the first portion right before you worry about the second.
- Small nudges go a long way. Where the shape is widest, a tiny move shifts a lot of area.
How many tries do you get?
As many as you like. Your closest try is the one that counts, and the results screen lists every try's percentage.
The results screen also has Show a perfect cut. It draws one exact answer as a dashed line over your best try. Showing it ends scoring for the day: any cuts after that are practice and won't change your score.
How is Portion scored?
Your score for the day is the accuracy of your closest try. The results screen shows that, your number of tries, and your average across days played.
Portion has no leaderboard. Your streak counts days played in a row, and your first cut of the day counts as playing. Only today's puzzle moves your streak. Your stats stay in this browser.
How do you share your result?
The Share button copies your best accuracy and your number of tries:
Portion #10 / 98.4% / 3 tries perdiem.games/portion
On a phone, Share opens your share sheet.
Common questions
Is there a timer?
No. Take as long as you like on each cut.
Can I play past days?
Yes. Past days open from the week strip on your results screen. They don't move your streak.
Do I need an account?
No. Portion is free and runs in your browser with nothing to install.
